The Friends' History

The Friends of the Leesburg Library formed as the "Leesburg Library Association" in 1953 and consisted of 18 members.  During the next 50 years, it would grow as the library grew, always with the mission of supporting the library and its staff with funds for expansion of programs, inventory, and furnishings.

Fundraising consists of membership dues, used book sales, teas, and memorial gifts.  Now into the third generation of committed citizen volunteers, the Friends of the Library has a long heritage of service to the larger community - which is Leesburg.

The music collection and the DVD (digital video disc) collection were both started with monies from the Friends.  Currently, the Friends are sponsoring ongoing children's programs, the Florida Sampler series, and computer classes.

The Friends have raised over $700,000.00 toward increased square footage and other enhancements for the new Library Building.  When completed, the new building will contain a Friends' Book Store, carrying used  books and related items.

Our space is located next to the café.
